Laos will take serious action to reduce the export of unprocessed natural resources as a measure to boost the domestic processing industry. In line with the processing industry and commerce development strategy for 2011-2020, Laos will have to reduce the export of unprocessed natural resources, including unprocessed minerals and timber, so that sufficient raw material is available for the domestic processing industry.

EU tightens timber import regulations

The European Union will not allow any timber products originating from illegal sources to enter its markets once new timber legislation comes into force next year. Chargé Affaires of the EU Delegation to Laos Mr Michel Goffin made this clear to Vientiane Times during a visit yesterday to Burapha Agro Forestry Co., Ltd (BAFCO) in Saen-oudom village, Xaythany district, Vientiane. “The EU market will only be open to legally sourced wood so if people are cutting wood illegally, it won’t be exported to Europe,” he said.

Laos : first for Investment destination of Vietnam

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is one of 55 countries of the world which is interested in for investment of the Vietnamese investors. By December, 2011, the investment project of Vietnam has reached 207 projects with the registered investment fund of US$3.4 billion or US$ 16.5 million for each project in 16 provinces of Laos. The most investment project from Vietnam has focused on hydropower, real estate, services, amusement, agriculture-forestry, mining and industry.

Vietnam targets investment in Laos’ central and southern provinces

A government report disclosed last week that 93 percent of the total value of Vietnamese investment in Laos lies in eight provinces in central and southern Laos.In total, Vietnam has investments in 16 of the 17 provinces in Laos, including the capital. The report stated that as of December 2011, the Lao government had approved 207 investment projects with total registered capital of US $3.4 billion.

Laos backs Vietnam’s bid for top investor ranking

Vietnam’s investment in Laos is on track to keep the country atop the list of foreign countries doing business in Laos, which Laos fully supports. Laos will continue to support Vietnam’s bid to maintain this ranking over the next 3 to 5 years, it was revealed at a meeting held in Champassak province on Friday.

Government is urged to halt the export of unprocessed timber because the Lao wood processing industry is experiencing a shortage of raw materials.

The Lao wood processing industry expects to face a shortage of raw materials this year if the government continues to export unprocessed timber. Lao Wooden Products Association President Mr Thongsavanh Souliyamath made the comment yesterday after the government announced a decision to postpone its logging quota, which could slow the supply of timber to the domestic wood processing industry.

Phu Bia to open new gold mine in Laos

Phu Bia, one of the largest mining companies operating in Laos, expects to kick off its new gold mining project in Vientiane province in March, the Australian miner reported. PanAust, the parent company of Phu Bia, this week announced the progress of its Ban Houayxai gold and silver mine project, saying the US$168 million gold and silver mining facility is scheduled to come on-stream in March this year.
