Allocating land to commercial investment projects can potentially offer improved access to services and expansion of employment opportunities for local communities. However, if environmental and social safeguards and natural resource governance systems are not fully in place the risk of negative impacts is high.
Two Lao language audio files are available to listen where affected citizens speak of problems they are facing after village lands were granted to concessions. Both files have been recorded in a Lao National Radio (103.7) program.

The Phouphieng Mineral Export-Import Sole Company is teaming up with the Mekong Mining Company to study the possibilities for bauxite and potassium mining and hydropower in Laos. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Tuesday in Vientiane between Phouphieng Company President Mr Vilaysith Liumxayachak and Mekong Mining Company President Mr Andrew Kent. Officials from both sides attended, along with the Vice President of the National Science Council, Dr Maydom Chanthanasinh.

More than 133,350 hectares of the Xe Sap National Biodiversity Conservation Area in Xekong and Saravan provinces will now be better protected, Deputy Head of the provincial Sector of Forest Conservation, Mr Keopaylin Gnonphetsy, said on Wednesday. The improved forest protection and surveillance will be funded by KwF, a German non-governmental organisation, at a cost of more than 1.9 million euros and the project will run from 2011-15.

The government has given permission for the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (HAG) of Vietnam to conduct an exploration survey forcopper deposits on 92 square kilometres of land in Lamam district of Xekong province. A Memorandum of Understanding for the survey was signed in Vientiane on Saturday by Lao government officials and HAG representatives, witnessed by leaders from both countries.

Laos plans to increase the land area certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for sustainable rattan production to boost the income of local families. Laos is first country in the world to have received FSC forest management certification on rattan products as part of the ‘Establishing a Sustainable Production System for Rattan Products Project’. The project carried out in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia aims to establish a sustainable rattan industry by introducing cleaner production and a credible chain-of-custody certification for raw rattan, as well as the establishment of a link to the European market.
